[January]_Building Of the Month :: THE CODE TOWER

“A fresh and honest building with solutions that move boundaries”

The code tower was a project, officially completed in January 2010 so it seemed only fitting to feature it as this month’s “B.O.M.” It has already won the Middle East Architect Award for Commercial Project of the Year.
The project holds 14 storeys of office space. It has been designed so that each individual floor is completely open plan, with no columns and floor to ceiling windows. Unlike many other buildings in Dubai, the Code Tower’s lobby is sunken below the street level to encourage informal interaction between the building and the surrounding neighborhood.
With its intricately designed facades that follow an intense layer of regulating lines, which also translate to the interior by specific allocations of fenestrations, the building is able to stand out in a city that has its fair share of generic city blocks. What is interesting is that it is located within Al Barsha, a primarily residential area. This area is often ignored as a site for building towers in favor of places like the Dubai Marina.
The consideration to every detail and aspect of the tower is refreshing, especially since the issue of public/private relationships within a space is tackled, and resolved quite successfully in the lobby area.
