“The citizens, instead of being the consumers of architecture, can be its constructors.”
- Vicente Guallart

How do we re-program, or even de-program our urban environment to best serve the needs of us all?

Why do residents of one area choose to travel outside of their specific environment for shopping, or interaction, or education, or any service? In some cases, even when these services are available locally, we choose to leave our familiar surroundings and go in search of our specific desire..human nature maybe? It could be a simple lack of cohesion in the urban structure creates the feeling that there is something lacking where we are.

There are many ways to stimulate social cohesion in the urban setting. Art installations in parks and pedestrian areas can generate new interest and attract crowds to promote interaction. Wide walkways, interspersed with seating and wide un-programmed spaces can allow organic flow of movement and encourage association between nuclear groups.

Commerce, as such, does not need to be imposed—as re-programming of available space and association develops through thoughtful design, it will seek to establish itself as a natural extension of these free associations. The desire of the people to respond to their own needs will automatically create beneficial commercial and public programs.

This type of development creates layers in the urban fabric. Re-thinking our already existing spaces can breathe new life into stagnating areas of the city. Where new programs develop, we allow for these revitalized areas to begin operating at maximum efficiency, providing for the needs of the inhabitants. This new energy will help in attracting those services and businesses best able to serve local needs.
