Francis Kéré illustrates the dream of one of the most unprivileged communities in the world, Gando. The dream is the fight for a better and brighter future. Francis helps mold this vision into a reality by designing a school in the region. The project projects innovative methods within the design by using materials that function to benefit the interior; whether it’s for ventilation, cooling or shading.
One main problem that is tackled within the project is the issue of the intense weather conditions of the region. Temperatures are excruciatingly high so to overcome the heat classrooms are located underground, which provides adequate shade. Moreover, earth tubes, which are zero-energy geothermal solar cooling systems, are used for ventilating this space. It merely acts as exposure. Likewise, the group of holes are located between the ceiling and roof.
In addition to the heat, weather conditions also include heavy rainfall. That issue is dealt with by using a type of surface to withhold rain drops from entering the building. The surface collects all the rain water and releases it to be used on the greenery and landscape. This consists of public spaces for students to utilize during their free time.
In terms of the actual materials used to construct the school, clay is heavily used since it is widely available within the region. This local material is applied on the buildings, meanwhile solar panels are place on the roof tops. In addition to solar energy, the design allows for the use of wind energy to lower electricity costs.
Each aspect of the Secondary School Gando has been considered to take advantage of the natural resources of the region. The building is truly sustainable and its low cost designs make for an efficient construction process.
